WoW Forever professions guide: best picks and 1–300 leveling
Not sure which profession to choose, what to pair together or what to save while leveling? This guide covers the twelve professions currently listed on the site, practical 1–300 route frameworks, material brackets, early gold choices, Camping and the connection to Legacy progression.
Beta note: recipe availability, skill-up ranges, material quantities and profession rewards can change between snapshots. Use the routes as planning guidance, not as a guaranteed shopping list.
Quick answer: which profession is right for you?
| Your goal | Good starting points | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Make gold while leveling | Herbalism, Mining or Skinning | You gather materials while questing and can sell them without first buying a recipe library. |
| Supply your own crafting | Herbalism + Alchemy; Mining + Blacksmithing or Engineering; Skinning + Leatherworking | Pairing a gathering skill with its main crafting sink reduces Auction House dependence. |
| Support a cloth-wearing character | Tailoring + Enchanting | Cloth drops can become gear, bags or enchanting materials as you replace equipment. |
| Prepare for group content | Alchemy, Cooking, Fishing or Engineering | Consumables, food and utility items remain useful beyond ordinary questing. |
| Spend less time between pulls | Cooking, First Aid or a gathering profession | Food, bandages and material sales all reduce the friction of leveling. |
Profession overview
| Profession | Type | What it is useful for |
|---|---|---|
| ⚗️ Alchemy | Crafting | Makes potions, elixirs, flasks and other consumables. A strong choice if you raid, PvP or want to sell items other players use regularly. |
| ⚒️ Blacksmithing | Crafting | Creates plate armor, weapons and useful metal items. It is a natural match for characters who use mail or plate gear and players who can keep a steady supply of bars. |
| ✨ Enchanting | Crafting | Turns unwanted equipment into enchanting materials and applies enchants to gear. It is convenient on characters that run dungeons or regularly replace equipment. |
| ⚙️ Engineering | Crafting | Makes gadgets, explosives and utility items. It offers practical tools for open-world play and PvP, but usually needs a reliable source of metal and parts. |
| 🧵 Leatherworking | Crafting | Creates leather and mail gear plus useful crafted items. It pairs naturally with Skinning and suits characters who want to process their own hides. |
| 🧶 Tailoring | Crafting | Uses cloth to make bags, cloth armor and other items. It is a convenient option for cloth wearers because cloth drops while you quest. |
| 🌿 Herbalism | Gathering | Collects herbs while you travel. It pairs with Alchemy, but it is also one of the simplest ways to earn early gold without buying materials. |
| ⛏️ Mining | Gathering | Collects ore for Blacksmithing and Engineering. Mine while you quest if you want materials, skill progress and a steady Auction House option. |
| 🔪 Skinning | Gathering | Collects leather from beasts you defeat. It adds little route planning because you can level it naturally while questing. |
| 🍖 Cooking | Support | Turns meat and fish into food buffs. Keep it current if you want better recovery while leveling or useful consumables for group play. |
| 🎣 Fishing | Support | Provides fish for Cooking and can supply materials that other players buy. It is slower and more location-dependent than ordinary gathering. |
| 🩹 First Aid | Support | Turns cloth into bandages for extra healing between pulls. It is a low-cost support skill for players who want less downtime while leveling. |
WoW Forever profession leveling routes from 1 to 300
These are practical route frameworks rather than exact recipe-by-recipe guides. Recipe colors, trainer locations and skill-up breakpoints can move during beta, so check the current recipe before spending a large amount of gold.
- Alchemy: Start with basic healing potions, move through elixirs and greater versions, then use higher-level herbs for protection potions and endgame consumables.
- Blacksmithing: Work through copper and bronze, then iron and steel, followed by mithril and thorium. Bars are the main bottleneck, so mine while leveling or buy in batches.
- Enchanting: Disenchant unwanted gear as you level, then move through bracer, shield, glove, boot, armor and weapon enchants as the skill brackets open.
- Engineering: Progress from copper parts and powder to bronze, iron, mithril and thorium devices. Keep enough metal and stone ready before a crafting session.
- Leatherworking: Use light, medium, heavy, thick and rugged leather through the brackets. Skin beasts while questing if you want to reduce the material cost.
- Tailoring: Work from linen to wool, silk, mageweave and runecloth. Make bolts first, then choose between bags, leveling gear and higher-value cloth pieces.
- Herbalism: Gather every useful herb you pass: early Peacebloom and Silverleaf lead into Mageroyal, Briarthorn, Bruiseweed, Wild Steelbloom, Kingsblood, Liferoot, Sungrass, Dreamfoil and high-zone herbs.
- Mining: The simple route is copper, tin, iron, mithril and thorium. Follow the zones you are already questing in instead of making separate farming trips whenever possible.
- Skinning: Skin the beasts you kill. This is the lowest-friction profession to level because the route follows your normal questing and grinding.
- Cooking: Use the meat and fish available in your current zones, then move toward higher-stamina food as the skill increases. Keep a small reserve for your next leveling bracket.
- Fishing: Begin in capital and low-level waters, then move to mid-level zones, coasts and special pools. Fish for your own Cooking materials or sell the surplus.
- First Aid: Use linen, wool, silk, mageweave and runecloth bandages as the skill brackets rise. Keep the cloth you need before selling the rest.

Camping and professions in WoW Forever
Camping makes professions more visible during normal adventuring. Blizzard's current overview describes a Basic Campfire campsite with rest, vendors, repairs, profession workspaces and temporary buffs. Nearby players can contribute crafted objects, and each profession provides its own camp utility. The overview also describes profession objects learned at different skill levels, with more advanced objects coming from Blueprint recipes.
That means Camping supports the professions your group already has; it does not replace profession skill levels, trainers or recipe materials. Set up a campsite before a long quest route or dungeon session, use the temporary benefits, then keep leveling your profession normally.
Read the Legacy guide as well: Legacy has a separate Professions tree for account-wide progression, while your ordinary profession skill and recipes remain character choices.
Profession advice for leveling, alts and gold
- Gather as you travel: herbs, ore and leather become skill points, crafting inputs or Auction House inventory.
- Do not buy every material too early: prices and recipe availability can change, especially during beta. Buy for the next bracket instead of the entire 1–300 route.
- Use alts deliberately: a gathering alt can supply a crafter, while Cooking, Fishing and First Aid can support whichever character you play most.
- Watch recipe color: orange recipes are the safest skill-up choices, yellow recipes are less certain, and grey recipes no longer provide skill points.
- Check the class guide: utility preferences vary by role, so compare your profession plan with the class guide before committing.
Profession FAQs
Which profession should I choose in WoW Forever?
Choose based on your goal. Take two gathering professions for simple early gold, pair Herbalism with Alchemy or Mining with Blacksmithing and Engineering if you want to supply your own crafts, or choose a crafting profession that matches your class and playstyle.
What are the best WoW Forever professions for making gold?
Gathering is usually the easiest early route because you can sell herbs, ore and leather while leveling. Crafting can become more profitable later when you have recipes, customers and a reliable supply of materials.
Should I level professions while leveling or wait until 60?
Level gathering as you quest because the materials and skill points arrive naturally. For expensive crafting professions, compare the Auction House cost with the value of the finished items before pushing the whole route at once.
How does Camping affect professions in WoW Forever?
Camping adds profession workspaces, vendors, repairs and temporary buffs to a shared campsite. Nearby players can contribute crafted objects, and each profession provides its own camp utility. Camping supports professions; it does not replace leveling them.
Do Legacy perks help professions in WoW Forever?
Legacy is separate from profession skill levels, but its Professions tree is designed to support gathering and crafting characters. Legacy progress is earned across the account while each character chooses its own perks. See the Legacy guide.
What materials do I need for professions from 1 to 300?
The route table lists the main materials by profession and skill bracket. Exact quantities depend on recipe colors, discoveries and the recipes available in the current beta snapshot, so stockpile gradually rather than treating the list as a fixed shopping bill.
For current source and beta-version details, see the Sources page. This is an independent fan guide, and profession information can change before launch.
